Eclectic Method Comes to SxSWA Multimedia Mash-UpSometimes when I'm in a philosophical mood (as much as my dust covered brain can muster anyway) and people ask me what it's like talking to professional bands and artists and such for fun and profit I tell them this: Every person you speak to is like a mirror that reflects upon yourself whether you want it to or not. You will see yourself reflected back from the not so shiny surface of this person no matter who or what the situation is. Pauper, prince or candlestick maker it's all just human mirrors reflecting. Interviewing the famous professional musician goes like this: "Well last Wednesday I played to a sold out show at the base of Mount Fuji." I nod agreeably and pseudo-knowingly over my extra cheesy stuffed jalapeños to the star while my internal voice responds with, "Last Wednesday I watched ancient Flintstones reruns for 5 hours in my Bon Jovi pajamas (Yes, I have some. I bought them on clearance for a dollar eighty eight at Kohl's. When you stop laughing please continue)." But after something like 280 pro level interviews I have never felt like I was missing a dimension. Totally. Like I'm really good with my training wheels bolted on in this three dimension thing but these guys....? Even just trying to grasp Eclectic Method's level of media knowledge let alone their execution of implementing that multi-media into their performance would take some sort of crazy degree in mash ups and probably a Masters Degree in.... I think it is better just to enjoy the output. Check this out: Eclectic Method is the entertainment equivalent of what Michael Hawk is to basketboarding and Tony Jordan is to skateball. It doesn't make matter if that makes sense on paper because mash ups never look good in print but when the other senses are engaged it becomes amazing. And that is part of the extreme genius that is Eclectic Method. Yes, they try to engage all the other senses besides taste and probably smell (as far as I know) but in using all the forms of visual and audio media possible that includes the last several decades of recordings be it music, film, TV, probably home movies as well, they are also engaging the most powerful sense trigger as well. Nostalgia. And only the most hardened of hearts can ignore a good solid and honest beat. Check this out too: Eclectic Method - Computer On from Eclectic Method on Vimeo. There is only one way to experience Eclectic Method and that is live. They are a true media dichotomy. How many plays do they have on their Myspace today? 18. Eighteen plays total right now. How many sold out shows do they have in the next month? Probably 19. Eclectic Method puts on a performance that must be experienced in as many dimensions as possible to be truly appreciated. These are artists who have worked with U2, Fatboy Slim, MTV, New Line Cinema, and toured pretty much every continent except the chilly one with those cute little penguins they make IMAX movies about. So all this being said I have some great news. Eclectic Method is performing live at the South By Southwest festival from March 15 through the 18th. I do apologize that I cannot give you definite locations just yet but the magic that is SXSW is still being conjured so please check the calendar. Go have fun and send all your pics back here to Adobe Airstream. I know I would like to see them. Here's a fun one: "It belongs to you." 1 CommentFeedAdd Comment |
